Day 5 - 24th May - Monmouth to Bishop's Castle

Day 5 was a relatively short day with most of the climbing done in the first half.

The day started well with an early morning discovery of Waitrose which thankfully sold the staple fuel of Soreen malt loaf and PSP hydration tablets. The malt loaf does the trick in terms of low fat energy. It's also probably like eating cardboard so treat element was provided by Haribo. Compliments to the breakfast provided by #7 Church Street - without being negative to previous B&B's,this was the best and reflects well on its accompanying restaurant business.

The climb out of Monmouth was a good challenge on a full stomach and the legs did feel it for the first hour.

Thereafter, the profile rolled rather too much for an alleged easy day and thankfully the undulations eased after hitting the outskirts of Hereford.Today was a hot day so several pub stops were taken for refreshments.

All worked out well and the roads and traffic were ok and the afternoon was taken very easily. Getting into a steady routine of stopping every 20 miles or so to split the days up. The latter part of the day was also on roads absent of traffic and it was time to switch off totally and enjoy.

Scenery was dramatic leaving Monmouth and remains attractive around Bishops Castle.

Best beer garden of the trip was the Castle Hotel - ideal for planning the next day
